Our history
Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK's journey is rooted in the power of philanthropy and the dedication of visionary individuals committed to advancing head and neck cancer research and care.
Our story begins in 1979 with a generous £10,000 gift from the Filmer-Wilson family, given in memory of a loved one treated for head and neck cancer. This act of kindness established a dedicated head and neck cancer research fund.
Oracle cancer trust and the Royal Marsden
This fund was then grown into what became Oracle Cancer Trust by Peter Rhys Evans, a renowned ENT/Head and Neck Surgeon at the Royal Marsden Hospital. In 1986, Peter recognised the potential of an independent head and neck cancer charity and over the next decade worked to nurture and grow the research fund into what became later known as Oracle Cancer Trust. Peter’s approach to head and neck cancer care was holistic and forward-thinking, combining surgical excellence with multi-disciplinary teamwork, a strong focus on research, and a commitment to training future generations of specialists.
Importantly, Peter was keenly aware of the inequalities in head and neck cancer care, both within the UK and globally. He worked tirelessly to create opportunities for promising young head and neck trainees from underserved areas to train and conduct research at UK centres of excellence. This commitment to addressing disparities in care and research opportunities remains a core part of our mission today.
Head and Neck Cancer Foundation (HNCF)
In parallel to the development of Oracle Cancer Trust, the Head and Neck Cancer Foundation (HNCF) was established, co-founded by Professor Mark McGurk and Sir Frederick Hervey-Bathurst. Driven by personal experiences and a shared vision to improve head and neck cancer care, HNCF focused on raising awareness, supporting patients, and promoting best practices in treatment and care.
The formation of Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK
On May 17, 2024, Oracle Cancer Trust and the Head and Neck Cancer Foundation united to form Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK. This merger represents a significant milestone in our race to overcome the head and neck cancer crisis currently facing the UK. By combining our strengths, resources, and shared vision, we are better positioned than ever to make a lasting impact across the entire spectrum of head and neck cancer - from research and awareness to patient care and support.
Our history is not just about organisations, but about the countless individuals - researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, carers, and supporters - who have contributed their time, expertise, and resources to advance our cause. It's a story of resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those affected by head and neck cancers.
